The news is the second major announcement from YTL Developments this week following confirmation that final planning approval has been granted for the YTL Arena Complex at the Brabazon Hangers.

The Housing Design Awards are unique in that they are promoted by all five major institutions for property professionals*.

Originally launched in 1948, the awards began just a year before the pioneering aeroplane which gives Brabazon its name first took to the skies. Following the release of the shortlist this week, the winners of the Awards will be announced in July.

The new homes at Brabazon have been designed by award-winning architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. Based in Bath, the firm is responsible for some of the most innovative and high-profile architectural projects in the South West, including the restoration of Bath Abbey.

Seb Loyn, Planning & Development Director at YTL Developments, said that commissioning the best architects is central to the vision for Brabazon:

“Filton Airfield was the birthplace of Concorde. We have always felt it is really important to live up to that legacy at Brabazon. Investing in quality design has been a guiding principle from the outset, and it has led us to make some bold design choices: our homes are much more spacious than the norm and many feature double-height ceilings.

"The homes at Brabazon are not only more spacious than average, but the architecture is also designed to reflect the heritage of the historic former Airfield. The homes are built of solid red brick, matching the material of the listed aircraft hangar 16U which will also be restored as part of the first phase of development. The rooflines of the houses also echo the profile of an aeroplane’s tail-fin, as well as orienting the solar panels to the South to maximise their energy efficiency."

“Those little design details add up to make the homes really distinctive and this nomination is great recognition to the whole team for their hard work.”

“To have received this nomination for the very first phase shows the huge potential of this special site," says Andy Theobald, Partner at Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios. “It’s one of the reasons why Brabazon is set to become not only a thriving new neighbourhood for Bristol, but one of the most exciting new neighbourhoods in the South West.”

YTL Developments anticipates that the first new residents will move into their new homes at Brabazon in 2021.
